Fathers denied legal rights to see their children after a break-up. Grandparents dismissed as causing ‘damage’ to their grandchildren when they ‘interfere’ in divorces.
The reforms to family law proposed by the Government’s adviser on families reads like some poisonous feminist tract from the Sixties.
David Norgrove’s Family Justice Review is a misguided piece of outdated, sexist nonsense which enshrines in law a mother’s unassailable right to raise her children — alone.
Mr Norgrove decrees that fathers should have no legal right to enjoy time with their children when a relationship ends. He even says that for a father to have a ‘meaningful relationship’ with his children after his marriage breaks down can do ‘more harm than good’.
He claims his review is all based on what’s ‘best for the child’.
Yet he ignores decades of research that shows children from broken homes benefit from maintaining a stable, constant relationship with their mothers and their fathers, as well as with their extended family.
As Iain Duncan Smith says — and countless parents who’ve been through the agony of a divorce know — these reforms would ‘fuel the epidemic of fatherless families’.
And there is a terrible irony here: successive governments have, quite rightly, gone to huge efforts to ensure fathers from broken relationships support their children financially. Now they are being told that, despite that support, they will have no legal right to any access.
Few of us have been untouched by the break-up of a family, whether our own, our children’s or a friend’s.
I’m not saying all fathers are paragons — the sad truth is that both mothers and fathers use their children as pawns for maximum leverage in divorce negotiations. It’s just that the law as it stands gives women the upper hand.
In the bitterness of a divorce, some women use every dirty trick in the book to deny decent men access to their own children. I have even known normally sensible women, egged on by their divorce lawyers, to claim falsely that their husbands abused them, so as to deny them access to the children.
I’ve seen successful career women claiming poverty or even quitting work to screw every penny out of their children’s father, yet still deny him access.
Guilty till proved innocent is the dictum for dads in the Family Law Courts.
David Cameron has long promised his will be the most family-friendly government in history. He can prove it by condemning Mr Norgrove’s unjust Anti-Family Review and enshrining in law the right of every decent father to a fair share in the raising of his children.

Hi all, can anyone throw some more light on fathers right in Scotland? I have 2 kids with my ex partner and have been separated from her since February this year. Thing is, we had a very bad relationship and went through a lot together. I eventually ended it after so many weeks of stress and fighting with her, she moved back to her family with my kids and since then her demands and conditions are so horrible, she only wants me to see the kids through a support center for just one hour, i have been paying maintenance through CSA and never missed any payments,I am an engineer offshore and work away lots.I miss my kids and she uses a lot of manipulative gestures to control the situation and also has requested I don’t put up pictures of my kids for my other family members to see.I am African and I have lots of family members all over the world, my kids are my life, can i not show them off???? Suggestions are welcome…Thanks

I’m going through my second separation with my wife, the first time she had an injunction on me, stopping me from seeing my 2 step children and my son. after a few months we managed to reolve our differences and I agreed to get counselling, I moved back into the family home and we moved on.
Now 2 years later, My wife started going out with her single friends drinking until the early hours, going out after work and even popping out for a couple of hours on Mother’s day!
She said she was not happy as I don’t like visiting people / going out / having fun. I replied all these things cost money and we had bills and a holiday booked that we needed to pay and save for.
She sold me she needed sometime alone and we agreed that I would move out for 2 weeks and I took my son (8) with me, We had an excellent time. During this time his mother never tried to contact him once (she told me not to contact her during the 2 weeks) anyway, in the second week, I spoke to my wife and we agreed we would move back home on the Saturday, On Thursday night I had 2 police officers at my door saying there was a report of abuse on my son! I explained there was no such thing and they checked on him, seeing him asleep saf and sound.
they left satisfied and closed the case. I called my wife (who, after threatening a solicitor on whoever called the police, admitted it was her based on a pack of lies from one of her friends). We argued over the phone but agreed that I would still return on Saturday and I was to arrange an appt with Relate.
On the Friday afternoon, I get a text message from my wife that she has taken my son out of school early, contacted a solictor and will call the police (again) if I try to contect her or return to my home.
I’m completly devestated, I don’t have a clue what to do now. I feel she was using the police to get some kind of abuse thing going to justify legal aid, like she did the last time.
Any thoughts?

My Brother has recently split up with his girlfriend and they have a 4year old child together. As they have not been seeing eye to eye on things, mum has decided that my brother can no longer see his child. My brother is a good citizen who works hard for a living and is a very good father to his children. I’m so dissapointed that mum is behaving in this way. I do think that some fathers are not up to the job and do cause my harm than good but my brother is a good dad. I told my brother he may have to go down the court route to see his kids but he simply can not afford it. Now what do we do? Looks like game over :0(

I have read David Norgrove’s views and In my humble opinion I have never read so much rubbish in all my life this person is clearly a charlaton if he does not understand that two parents are better than one and having the blessing of a fathers being in a childs life is a life time benefit for the child.
David Norgrove in my opinion is a brainless moron, cretin imbecile, idiot, and is completely clueless on this subject. How on earth he manages to secure these high level positions with his midset and views on father’s rights that go back to the sixties and seventies is beyond belief.
I have a 2 year old child and I see him as much as possible and have even secured all my rights in a court of law.
He is a poor cretin that was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I would do anything for my child.
I think his report should be put where it belongs in the bin and he should change his mindset which is a joke just like his stupid character.

in reply to the comments mad by ‘deborah’ nov 28 2011…
i am in a very similar situation as your son, and my mother is in an equally similar position to yourself, i have a daughter at 20 months ind for the first 16 of them i was a municipal part of my wee girls life and spent almost every possible second with her. My relationship with my ex broke down and within 6 months of my daughter being born , she had a new boyfriend , who, ironically is my nieces godfather and proceeded to go on weekend away and holidays abroad whilst leavin me in the care of my daughter,
after a ridiculously petty argument her mother banned me from seeing my little girl and has proceeded to make my life a misery for the last 4 months !
i have started legal proceedings but seem to be getting a runaround due to my ex-partner and her families lack of correspondance and refusal to put my name on my daughters birth certificate if anyone can advise me further if they have had a similar experience then i would appreciate it greatly.
i no longer know how to deal with this and would appreciate any input you may be able to offer in respect to your own situation and also anyone elses that may read this post contact me through GALLAD82@HOTMAIL.CO.UK

My partner has left me after 17 years taking our 3 sons with her after confronting her over a suspected affair, she will not answer her phone or reply to texts asking when i can see my children which are aged 15,12 and 4.After the confrontation which was heated but not violent she has now tarnished me with being abusive, both verbally and finacially saying also that she is scared of me and the children are also, claims which i strongly refute but the longer she refuses to talk my fear is that our childrens minds will be aligned with her false accusations,oh and please don,t say give it time as thats to her advantage….all I want is to see my children but hey I’m ONLY THE DAD!

Does this idiototic man Norgrove have family? If he has then why have none of them told him what an absolute load of rubbish his report is! I love my Grandson very much and was at his birth at the request of both his parents, three years later I am allowed to supervise visits for three hours twice a month. My son is not allowed to see his son “in case he kidnaps him”on his own…..Last Christmas my grandson had to open his presents from us in an indoor play park surrounded by at least 50 other children playing…we are not allowed to take him anywhere apart from the park, indoor playpark or library, he is three years old. No other member of my son’s family is allowed to see my grandson! We are all good, loving people and have a lot to offer this little boy as we do all the other children in our family. My son has tried to commit suicide as he feels he has lost everything and feels that he cannot go on fighting is ex and the courts. I would love to meet Mr Norgrove to ask him where the hell he gets the idea that keeping children away from their Fathers helps anybody!!!!!!

Discrimination against us dads that want there kids in there life. I have fought n fought 2 get the access I have at the moment n all it takes is 1 hissy fit from the ex and its back to square one. Any government that approves this is so far in the dark ages its unreal. In most cases the child or children should be placed with their fathers. I Think Jeremy Kyle has a lot to answer for aswell. Condems need to go and bring back justice for dads because this is sexist.
